Wes Mattheu and the New Way Down
“They are paving the road between old and new by using mandolin, fiddle, the upright bass, and cello; some dating back to 1910. These Philadelphians are forced to explain, “Yes we do live in the city and not in the hills of Kentucky”.”

Mason Porter
“From a whisper to a roar Mason Porter will take you by surprise. Combining lush harmonies with hand clapping sing-alongs and the
unfiltered emotion of a hungry young rock band, Mason Porter is a
force that evokes the spirits of each and every person whose life they
touch. Call it folk, rock, bluegrass, blues or country; Mason Porter
is all of these. Through creative songwriting and constant experimentation Mason Porter is a group of musicians working together to push the limits of traditional American music. This is clearly evident on the bands first full length album Thunder In The Valley (Uncle Nicky Records, 2009).”

Manatawny Creek Ramblers
“Since 2004 the band has built a mixed repertoire of classic bluegrass tunes by the likes of Bill Monroe, Don Reno, The Stanley Brothers, Del McCoury and Flatt & Scruggs as well as an array of original material. During that time The Manatawny Creek Ramblers have collected an enthusiastic group of followers.”

Marc Silver and the Stonethrowers
“The band blends a passion for traditional song, Appalachian fiddle tunes, and jazz with a unique mix of original songwriting, bluegrass and folk music. Lead singing with great vocal character and seamlessly blended three-part vocal harmonies fill out their energetic delivery.”

Adrien Reju
“Adrien Reju has captivated audiences with her clear, lilting voice and her sparkling stage presence. After gaining her degree in classical guitar from Ithaca College, the New York City raised singer/songwriter took to the music circuit of Philadelphia, toured throughout the nation with the rootsy trio Angel Band with David Bromberg, and was the creative force behind the Philadelphia-based bluegrass outfit The Lowlands.”

Joshua Park
“Joshua Park has emerged as an exciting new addition to the Philly
local music scene. His EP “One Wish” was released in December 2007,
and a full length album, currently being recorded with a full band and
a lot of love, is on the horizon for release in 2010. This lyrically
driven singer/songwriter counts John Prine, Dan Bern, and Mason
Jennings among his strongest influences, and consistently delivers
poignant songs derived from his own life experience. As a solo artist,
an acoustic guitar trio, or supported by a full band Joshua has a raw
passion that is evident with every note.”

Sunday, April 11, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

This 2-hour workshop will give you a taste of art therapy. Participant will express themselves through artwork and to share what the art means to them. Art therapy offers a unique opportunity to use nonverbal symbols and metaphors to communicate ideas and feelings that can be difficult to put into words. Visual images can work on many levels, and can express seemingly contradictory ideas and feelings. Many find expressing themselves in this way to be freeing and cathartic. Therapeutic art leads to insight and reinforces awareness. And it’s fun! Just creating artwork in a nurturing environment can improve self-esteem and reduce tension and stress.

You do not have to be an artist to participate in art therapy. Creative self-expression can communicate your inner self regardless of skill level or intention. Marking art, as a healing process, promotes joy, peace and relaxation.

Cost: $25

It’s time to get excited about the fourth installation of Pecha Kucha Night: Philadelphia! For the first time ever, we are presenting the evening with a theme: we want to showcase some of the amazing entrepreneurial actvity that goes on around Philly.

Mike Froelich of the West Philly Tool library has helped us gather a group of people who have all started something great. We have folks who have started businesses or organizations based on ideas that range from liberation of local radio to cupcakes on wheels to team-building with sword and sorcery. It will all converge this Saturday when they tell their story using Pecha Kucha, a kind or rapidfire createive show-and-tell in which each presenter shows 20 slides for 20 seconds apiece.

We’re beyond excited, and would like to share the event with everyone, West Philly to Old City to South Philly and beyond. We ask for $5 at the door to cover for the expenses of setting these events up, but we promise – it will be one of the best $5 you’ve ever spent!

The Pecha-Kucha global site is a great place to learn more about the special performance/presentation art format:
http://pecha-kucha.org/night/philadelphia/

And stay tuned to our developer’s blog, where we will soon be featuring mini bios about the presenters!

Sunday, December 13, 11 – 1 p.m.

Create, explore, play…. Join us for creative artistic expression focused on emotional well-being, exploration of inner thoughts and dynamics, releasing worry, stress, and everyday life troubles. Variety of media will be used including drawing, collage, painting, and other themed projects with close guidance from the Art therapist. Participants will be encouraged to share, listen, relate and explore with each other as much as they feel comfortable doing in this supportive and nurturing group environment. Topics that may be explored include but are not limited to relationships, balance of life and priorities, hopes/fears, dreams and much more. Art therapy offers a unique opportunity for the use of nonverbal symbols and metaphors that are able to communicate ideas and feelings difficult to put into words. Visual images are capable of working on many level, and of expressing seemingly contradictory ideas and feelings simultaneously. Many find expressing themselves in this way to be freeing and a cathartic release.
Therapeutic art inevitably leads to fresh insights and provides concrete reinforcement for awareness. Most importantly you do not have to be an artist to participate in art therapy. In fact, creative self-expression is satisfying for individuals without art training because their inner selves are successfully, articulately communicated regardless of skill level or intention. Art making, as a healing process, has been shown to be effective in that it promotes a sense of joy, peace and relaxation.
Learn more about art therapy at Kat’s website.

Cost: $25
