8static is Philly’s premier monthly chip music event. Whatever you call it — chiptunes, 8-bit,chip music — it is created from the sound chips of old computers and video game consoles. Sponsored by the Hacktory, 8static hosts artists from around the world each month at Studio 34. Every show features a free workshop or lecture, followed by open mic and the main show. Each event showcases three musical artists and one live visualist — all for just $5 with a flier, or $8 without.

8static is Philadelphia’s first monthly chipmusic event, organized by The Hacktory. This weekend, 8static has a very special guest, Tonylight, straight from Milan, Italy. You may have seen him at Blip Festival 2008 in NYC, but this is his first performance here in Philadelphia! $8 / $5 with flier • All Ages» Tonylight [Milan, Italy]

Antonio Cavadini a.k.a. Tonylight lives and works in Milano, Italy. As a musician and explorer, he has been fascinated by 8-bit music since the beginning and joined the community. He plays the Game Boy and old computers like NES and Atari ST since 2001. Due to the simplicity of the applied tools, he finds lightness and freshness in the 8-bit scene. Especially he likes the project micromusic.net, a community where he finds friends with similar interests.

8-Bit chiptune rapper from the NES 2A03 scene. Some of the raps are serious, others really aren’t. You figure out which ones are which.

» Cheap Dinosaurs [Philadelphia, PA, USA]

Dino Lionetti is Cheap Dinosaurs. Ex-Chromelodeon and Sprite Slowdown. LSDJ + Nord Lead.

» Chromix [New York, NY, USA]

Chromix has been creating dancefloor-friendly electronic music for over 10 years. Put a Gameboy in his hands and he is a force to be reckoned with. Be prepared for dancing, screaming and probably more than a little headbanging.

» Enso [Philadelphia, PA, USA]

Enso, also known as Alex Bond, is Philadelphia’s finest pixel pusher.

» Open Mic & Visuals

Each month 8static features an open mic and visuals session where you can show off your best new stuff. Bring your 1/8th-inch output-able audio device or your RCA output-able video device, plug in, and rock out.

Chipmusic and 8-bit video are created on re-purposed computers and video game consoles from the 80′s and early 90′s, using the aesthetics and limitations of the hardware as expressive tools. This month’s music by Alex Mauer, Void Vision, and Go Motion; visuals by NO CARRIER. Free screening of Reformat the Planet 1.5. $5 ahead with flyer; $8 at the door
