For the month of March, Fatima Adamu and Rob Snyder will be in Seattle, training to become yoga teachers with Ana Forrest. Studio 34 will be donating the proceeds from a few of our Forrest Yoga classes to help cover Fatima and Rob’s expenses. Come support them by attending any of the following yoga classes:

• Sunday Feb 21st, 10 a.m. with Morgan
• Thursday Feb 25th, 6 p.m. with Stephen
• Friday Feb 26th, 5:30 p.m. with Angie
• Saturday Feb 27th, 11 a.m. with Jason

Thursday and Friday’s classes are pay-what-you-can, Sunday and Saturday’s classes are $10. Class Cards, Work Exchange credit, and any extra cash donations are welcome.

Featuring presentations by Laura Whitehorn (former political prisoner & member of the Weather Underground, editor of the recent book The War Before) and Josh MacPhee & Erik Ruin of Justseeds. Music TBA. $3- $10 donation requested, benefitting Reconstruction Inc., a grass-roots community development company that strives to build people’s capacity to transform the communities in which they live.

All of the funds raised will go to benefit The Humanitarian Dance Experience:

Next May, Brittany will be traveling to Brazil, Tanzania, Ghana and India to do humanitarian work, connect with the locals and experience their cultures through dance. She will also be writing a book about her experiences in the hope of creating change in this world and inspiring others to do the same.

Please join Brittany for this donation yoga class at Studio 34. We will gather together as a community to celebrate all of the things we are grateful for. We will FLOW, SWEAT, eat some COOKIES and have some FUN!

Cost: Give what you can AND a few canned goods

ALL Donations will be going to Yoga with a Purpose to benefit the African Village Survival Initiative.

The AVSI is building economic self-determination programs to create a collective solution now, as unemployment in the African community reaches 50%. Programs include outfitting a licensed community kitchen as a resource for independent African food businesses. AVSI is also setting up a state of the art recording studio to give African artists, from throughout the world, a means to produce their own music, to use their talents and create their own self-sustaining employment.

Join us for an evening of music, dance, food and fun. ALL proceeds will go toward the purchase of medical equipment for Mbagathi District Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya.

About the Hospital:
Mbagathi hospital is 167-bed facility and the only district public hospital in Nairobi Province. The hospital is located on the edge of the Kibera slum, the largest slum in Kenya, and serves an annual average of 73,783 patients. Mbagathi district hospital runs the most important diagnostic center for tuberculosis in Nairobi and operates an HIV/AIDS clinic.

Equipment Needed:
This equipment is basic by Western standards with such items often found in each patient room. At the Mbagathi District Hospital, these items are scarce or non-existent.

  • pulse oximeter – $50/each: used to monitor patient oxygen levels and for diagnosis of life-threatening AIDS-related infections
  • EKG machine – $2000: used for the diagnosis of common emergent conditions, such as heart attacks.
  • blood pressure monitor – $35/each
  • internet access – $300/year: needed for communication and teleconferencing with medical experts from around the world.
  • centrifuge – $450 – needed for preparation of blood and cerebral spinal fluid samples to allow health care providers to evaluate specimens on site and expedite diagnoses.

7:30pm: Soulful vocals of Fatima Adamu

Fatima is the quintessential example of a modern-day Renaissance woman. In addition to holding a degree in Geography and Urban Studies from Temple, Fatima is a poet, model, actress, singer, fashion designer, dancer and painter.

8:30pm: African Dance performance with Anssumane Silla’, Nikki Brake-Silla’ and ensemble with live drummining. Followed by a African Dance lesson!

Anssumane began his dancing career at the tender age of 11. He has since danced professionally for over 18 years with the National Ballet of Guinea Bissau. He career has lead him to perform for Dignitaries, Ambassadors and Presidents from around the world. Anssumane has performed in Mali, Senegal, The Gambia, South Africa and Libya and has garnered numerous awards for excellence in dance performance and teaching. He teaches traditional and contemporary dance styles (Bijagos, Balanta, Fula, and Manjaco) from Guinea Bissau.

(EEF!) has fought around issues of sprawl and urban over-development; corporate biotechnology and free trade; everglades restoration politics; rock mining and heavy industry in the Everglades Agriculture Area. Held in honor of Studio 34’s very own Stephen Fisher, the event will raise money for ADHK’s community programs, including working with homeless men and presenting workshops for children who need alternative ways to express their issues. Attention area artists and musicians: Handmade Philly, presents ArtBeat, Making it to Music. Bring sketchbooks, yarn and other (non-paint) supplies, and work on projects while musicians play at our open mic. Additional features: supply swap and a variety of workshops including Upcycled Pamphlet Journal and Basic and Advanced Knitting.

Event is open to artists of all ages and skill levels and the first 50 receive a free homemade cookie.

$5 admission. 20% of the proceeds from this event will support the Philadelphia Arts in Education Partnership.

In mid-July Morgan and Jason will be blasting off and after a quick trip through the universe they will be landing in New Haven, Connecticut to attend yoga teacher training. So on July 12th they will be cooking up a storm and serving a benefit brunch at Studio 34 to help pay for all of that rocket fuel. Plus it would be nice to spend some time amongst friends before leaving!
