As the youngest of eleven children, it is perhaps not so surprising that I was the third in my family to become a massage therapist. I was still in my twenties when I graduated from the Brenneke School of Massage in Seattle, Washington, younger than either of my siblings who preceded me when they began their studies. The year following massage school I spent in Riverside, California: the desert is beautiful, but not quite for me, and I soon moved to Philadelphia. I am more at home not only with the climate of the mid-Atlantic states, but the history as well: I grew up in the Finger Lakes area of western New York state, and still find time to visit my hometown of Watkins Glen every year or so.
Music, and the beauty of language, were also instilled in me from a young age: we would sing as a family, in conjunction with prayer and reading of the King James Bible. In seventh grade I joined a writing group, in tenth grade I began writing music. I performed on trumpet, tuba, and voice in various ensembles through my teens and early twenties, and have been playing my guitar more weeks than not for the last twenty years. Much of the volunteering I do/have done in my West Philadelphia neighborhood centers around music; I am currently active with the Crossroads Music series based at 48th and Baltimore Avenue.
I ride a bicycle nearly everywhere I go, and a good day often involves an hour and a half of cycling just for fun. This past spring I became an assistant organizer with a local hiking meetup group, in order to develop hikes accessible by public transit. I've been known to do other things as well: the dream-catcher sculpture at the top the stairs at Studio 34 is one of my works.
