Documentary Screening: Image to Lifeworld
A free event with film, food and poster art
Sunday May 27th
7:30pm-9pm
Donations accepted for the T.O. Scholarship Fund

Image to Lifeword is an ethnographic film exploring how Theatre of the Oppressed is fostering community in West Philadelphia. Focusing on workshops held in the spring of 2012, the film follows how participants use Image Theatre—one of the many modalities developed under the umbrella of Theatre of the Oppressed—to parse issues of injustice that particpants wish to work on together. Interspersing interviews with workshop footage, Image to Lifeworld shows how these dynamic and sometimes challenging exchanges connect to lived and embodied experiences, producing possibilities for personal growth, new relationships, and a stronger sense of collective belonging.

This rough cut of Image to Lifeworld will be followed by discussion with the film’s director and interviewees. There will also be food and a small retrospective of poster art from the past 4 years of Philadelphia Theatre of the Oppressed. Donations go toward T.O. Philly’s Scholarship Fund. For more info, contact tophilly@gmail.com or call 215-730-0982.

Folkadelphia Presents: Honey Watts and Johnny Miles with special guest Rayvon Browne (from Brooklyn)
Saturday, May 19th
8 PM
$8

Please join us on Saturday, May 19th as we welcome home Honey Watts and Johnny Miles after their spring tour together. Joining the Philly musicians for the night are our new Brooklyn-based friends in Rayvon Browne. It will prove to be a memorable show of tender and gorgeous songs, weaved together by these musicians. It’s all happening at the intimate and extremely comfortable Studio 34 space in West Philadelphia and presented by Folkadelphia.

Honey Watts:
Raised in Mexico and California, Liz Fullerton has fronted the trip-hop outfit Dutch and contributed to Jedi Mind Tricks records. But in Honey Watts she strikes out to give her folk and country roots their fair due, sharing stories of love lost and adventures sought. And while she shares a biographical intensity with Neil Young and Leonard Cohen, Liz sings with the passionate desperation and whimsical playfulness of Nina Simone, Patsy Cline and Minnie Riperton. At times straight-forward in content and elsewhere masked in pastoral allegory, it’s the delivery of her lyrics that penetrates even the most passive listener. Carl Cheeseman is a New Jersey-born composer and musician, performing and recording with The Minor Arcana, Johnny Miles & the Waywards, Dawn Hiatt, and Birdie Busch, among others. His proficiency in electric guitar and lap steel, and passion for dulcimer and sitar, have made Carl an in-demand studio session player, as well as collaborator with poets, storytellers, theater companies and filmmakers.
Their self-titled album, released in April 2011, sets Liz’s songs into a musical fabric of muted tones and soft noises; some are given a simple acoustic presentation, but the record is also by turns ambient and electric, gently orchestrated and even experimental. Adventurous elements found on records by Nina Nastasia, Laura Gibson, Devon Sproule and Sharon Van Etten are identifiable upon multiple listens to Honey Watts. The duo is currently writing new material for their follow-up record.

Johnny Miles:
Drawing deeply from the classic America traditions of country, folk, blues and rock & roll, filtered through his own unique sensibilities, Johnny Miles creates contemporary 21st century snapshots of life, love, and loss that are at once familiar and yet altogether fresh, new, and exciting. Johnny is currently on tour in support of his third full-length (and 2nd with his group, the Waywards) entitled Lost Treasure Found, released April 2012 on the artist’s own independent label Tree Records. This latest release features perhaps his most beautiful work to date: upright bass, pedal steel, and strings swirl around harmonies, waltzes, and pristine ambience. With a relentless pace and work ethic, Miles gives the impression that he’s only just begun, but if there is one thing we’ve learned from his songwriting and performances thus far, it’s to expect the unexpected!

Rayvon Browne:
On the brink of releasing Companion, their second 8-song cassette (complete with complimentary digital download), NYC psych-folk band Rayvon Browne is a collaboration between Morgan Heringer (“ukulele virtuoso,” The New York Times) and Cal Folger Day (whose “vocal control and onstage presence command attention,” The New Yorker) with Joel Kruzic on the upright bass. Together they present a diverse set of original tunes & compositions, and also some remix’d classics, featuring tight vocal harmonies and swapping around on keyboards, uke, guitar, mandolin, melodica, and more. This night sees them off to a month-long tour in England, Ireland, and Germany.

Folkadelphia:
The folk music organization and weekly XPN2 radio show created by Fred Knittel. Through Folkadelphia, Fred hopes to introduce people to exciting new musicians and, with luck, change the way they perceive modern folk music. Folkadelphia radio is broadcast on XPN2 on WXPN Sundays from 3-5 PM and Tuesdays 6-8 PM. Upcoming in-studio guests include Kath Bloom, Sea of Bees, Psalmships, and more.

Also, catch Honey Watts and Johnny Miles performing and interviewing live and in the studio on Folkadelphia radio after the concert on Sunday, May 20th from 3-5 PM on XPN2.

Also, the Studio 34 Community 4th Birthday Celebration!

“Above and Below” is an art opening featuring potluck dinner and two live musical acts! The evening begins at 6:30 p.m. with the potluck dinner. Then we will look at some art and maybe have some reactions to works on paper (squiggly lines) by sculptor and Studio 34 co-founder James Peniston and photos (of the sky) by painter and Midwives Collective founder Christiana Kugel. They both worked on art really hard for a bunch of years (art’s so hard!). This show isn’t about that. This show is about finding ease in the finding of beauty-every day. Emotions recollected in tranquility.

Also, we can’t tell you why, but if you like David Bowie, please don’t miss this show. Also, if you like really big or really small things, please come (we could tell you why but won’t right here). Food, art show and super music by Studio 34 friends Gina Fontana, Jessica Marcus and Andrea Saylor! More music, you say? How about Dan Blacksburg and Evan Levine performing deranged ragtime, or “tin pan alley” music? Not enough?

Well, okay. That night Studio 34 will also be celebrating its 4th birthday!! So there might be cake!! Maybe vegan cupcakes! Probably dancing!

The Studio 34 community will be celebrating its 4th Birthday like we do. Food, art, music, dance and good feelings. Bring some food and a friend. Admission is FREE!!!!

Bio:
Ali Caccavella has been teaching yoga for over 7 years. She received her teacher certification from Wake Up Yoga in Philadelphia after moving from San Francisco where her love of yoga first took root. She teaches Vinyasa, Yin, and both Pre- & Post-Natal yoga, with a concentration on breath-inspired movement and a strong technical foundation to work safely and effectively with the body. Ali’s teaching melds modern applications of yogic philosophy with compassionate attention to strength-building, balance and attention to the physical & energetic body. Utilizing breath awareness, props and inspiration from the life, her classes are playful, creative and adaptable to individual needs. Her intention is to offer a practice that will allow her students to find breath, openness and peace in both body and mind.

Class Description:
Yoga is one of the best things women can do for themselves and their bodies, both during and after pregnancy. Cultivating an intimate connection to their bodies, yoga offers pregnant mothers an opportunity to develop deep trust in themselves and skills to navigate the mysteries of gestation and birth. Using breath awareness, and both strength building and restorative poses, this class will integrate shared experiences into powerful themes for expansion and surrender in this miraculous time of transformation.

Details: This full-day camp will be filled with fun, educational activities, and games. Yoga camp is unique because we spend time together as a team building trust and friendships that fall outside of a typical competitive sports camp, yet has all the benefits of developing a love for movement and play. Throughout the week, we’ll practice yoga, learn about yoga history and philosophy, prepare ayurvedic snacks (and a Friday meal), learn about staying healthy, create art, play games, make music, and still have time for reflection, relaxation and rest.
