fund drive | Help Continue How Philly Moves! (through 3/27)

Studio 34 photographer JJ Tiziou did the first photo shoot for his How Philly Moves project in Studio B back in spring of 2008. Since then, the project has grown into a massive public art project that over 1800 people have had a hand in. There are hundreds more Philadelphians who want to participate in this project, and with your help, we’ll be able to continue photographing them.

Images from that first shoot will be appearing on the side of the parking structures at the Philadelphia International Airport, in what will be one of the largest murals in the world. One of the images included (leftmost in the design) is of Michelle, a Studio 34 work exchange volunteer who participated in one of the shoots. In addition, the images are turning into a large scale projection project on the Kimmel Center during the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts next month!

Now JJ needs community support to continue this special project. Using Kickstarter, we can all contribute a little bit to help fund the next round of How Philly Moves photo sessions. See this PIFA video to learn a bit more about what these special events are like. Check out the Kickstarter video below, please pledge whatever you can, and most importantly, tell your friends!

meditation | Open Sit (Thursdays)

Thursdays at Studio34 Yoga | Healing | Arts
6-7pm

We are going to start having open sits again at Studio 34! On Thursdays from 6:00-7:00pm we will sit in the library (AKA the conference room) and share silence together. The hope is that this weekly gathering will serve as a support for practices of mindfulness, compassion and non-violence. The group does not need to be anything in particular, people may be practicing all different styles of meditation. If beginners are interested in sitting, simple guidance on Samatha (shinay/ calm abiding practice for concentration/ resting the mind) and Metta (tonglen/ practice of sharing loving kindness) may be offered. Everyone is welcome to bring some words with them to open or close the session that may provide inspiration and/or discussion. As long as people are quiet entering and exiting you may come and go as you need.

Mini Seminar | The Pains and Pleasures of Being a Stay at Home Dad (11/4)

Current and prospective Stay-at-home-dads are invited to a mini-seminar to meet other dads on November 4, 7:30 PM, at Studio 34.

The topic will be: The Pains and Pleasures of Being a Stay at Home Dad. The facilitator will be Gerald van Wilgen, who has been an international Stay-at-home-dad for more than 16 years. He published one book about the topic with Vestus, a Danish online publisher.

Van Wilgen is a firm believer in learning by trial and error, but not necessarily strictly one’s own trials and errors. His central message is that raising children is rewarding, but the reward will be received at the end of the process, not so much at the beginning.

Some of the topics covered are: how does your life change as a Stay-at-home-dad, how to deal with expectations of others, traps to avoid, resources you can use, importance of early learning, how to prepare for the later years.

The purpose of the seminar is to share experiences and to explore further activities.

The seminar is free, there will be a small donation requested to cover the costs.

workshop | “The Art of Letting Go” (10/14)

Thursday, October 14
6pm-8pm

Create, explore and play, and experience the healing effect of art making. Art therapy encourages deeper personal awareness and helps you communicate ideas and feelings that may be difficult to put into words. Art making also promotes a sense of joy, peace and relaxation which helps reduce stress and anxiety. We will be exploring use of 3D objects to create a mobile representing your life- Develop understanding, symbolic insights about creating balance in your life and learning to let go of worry, and the “illusion” of control.

Art materials will be provided, however if you wish to bring small found objects to use in your artwork or to share with others in the group (things that you don’t mind becoming part of an art project).

You don’t need to be “an artist” or have any artistic training to participate. Just bring your innate curiosity and desire for self expression!

Register via email, please include your name, email and phone number to kathrynjohnst@gmail.com

or you can register online at: http://katjohnston.yolasite.com/

Cost: $10

The Great Unknown

“’Tonight, Let’s Pretend’ is a work of meticulous beauty…one of my favorite albums of the year.” (The Deli Magazine)

“…the true strength in West Philly Americana quintet The Great Unknown lies in their moments of restraint. Check out “Shrapnel,” a simmering hymn rooted in a rickety cello duo. Dig the breezy whistling and banjo-led campfire harmonies on the flawless “The Weasel & The Worm,” which closes their self-released debut Tonight, Let’s Pretend.” (City Paper, Philadelphia)

A four piece alt-folk band from West Philadelphia, The Great Unknown conveys the joy of making art for the sake of its creation. They are a band of musician friends who clearly enjoy their craft and don’t shy away from showing it; a band in the old sense of the word, like a family or a gang. Over the last four years, the members have developed a friendship that is the source of both a collaborative creative process and an onstage dynamic that has elicited comments such as “Are you guys brothers?” and, “Those must be blood harmonies.”

Using instrumentation commonly found in folk and country music (acoustic guitars, lap steel guitar, banjo, harmonica), The Great Unknown has honed in on a style that’s both new and instantly recognizable. Their music engages audiences on a variety of levels: the vocal harmonies and focus on songwriting give the band a decidedly folk heart, while the arrangements and power in performance are often that of a rock and roll band. This flexibility allows The Great Unknown to play both intimate acoustic shows and bigger, louder rock venues. Their songs have become part of the canon of Philadelphia’s growing alt-folk community, a scene that is quickly being recognized around the country. The Great Unknown are currently supporting The New Skin EP, self-released in the summer of 2010. The New Skin EP can be heard and downloaded at www.digital.thegreatunknownmusic.com.

Liz Fullerton

“Acoustic music doesn’t mean much unless you’ve got a reason to listen. Liz Fullerton’s voice, intoxicating and sedate as it is without words, will force you to stop everything you’re doing to hear tales of slow journeys toward the center — the place where our heart are filled, our minds put to ease, and our spirits brim with wholeness. She will grab your attention like a baby wolf, and it will be impossible to watch her leave when the songs are through. But you will be better for it.”- Joshua Britton

“I visited Fullerton’s Myspace page so I could listen to her music. Oh my, what I heard was incredible! There is something so special about her voice, timeless and soulful, that makes her songs sound absolutely beautiful. Man, I thought I had a good knowledge of Philly artists but somehow Liz Fullerton went unnoticed to me until now. Oh, you better believe from now on I’ll keep an ear out for more Liz Fullerton music.” One Fan at a time (onefanatatime.com)

When forced to comply in a toxic environment, well-being suffers. An identity-questioning experience, life becomes a fight to prove your goodness. In this contemporary jazz dance event, you will be exposed to women in a negative web each trying to gain control of the situation and themselves.

Emerging Philly based choreographer, Tiffany Brooke Dow, presents 4 contemporary jazz dance pieces regarding toxic/negative environments and how we survive them.
