Exciting new project at Studio 34!

The HIVE: Healthcare Information is Vital for Everyone
community-supported online resource for under-insured Philadelphians

Are you under-/uninsured? Or have friends/family who lack adequate healthcare coverage?

We are at the beginning stages of creating an online healthcare and wellness resource for individuals who are under-insured. There are many free or reduced-cost services available throughout Philadelphia; however, these services can be difficult to locate and the system frustrating to navigate.

We would like to start on the right track by conducting a community needs assessment. Help us out by completing this super fast and easy 10 question survey!

November teacher of the month: Lily Cavanagh

Lily Cavanagh

For Lily, a good yoga class always includes a case of the giggles! She loves leading classes for all ages that cultivate a little bit of laughter for all we encounter. When she discovered yoga, it was a welcome complement to her competitive swimming background, and at first she found that there is joy in the process of exercise. Later, as her yoga practice deepened, she realized that yoga, and especially the practice of AcroYoga (a partner acrobatic and therapeutic practice), had taught her to communicate with herself and others with kindness and love. Since this discovery in herself, she has become excited to teach children to understand their own needs so that they can communicate with compassion and clarity. She is thrilled to offer a class full of laughter and communication to children in a playful and loving way. She is certified through the Color Me Yoga(TM) 200-hour Children’s Yoga Teacher Training. When not practicing yoga she enjoys a good swim practice, baking and eating cupcakes of all kinds, and spending at much time outside as possible.

Please join us for a special evening of music, showcasing an all West Philly line-up with long-time neighborhood favorites Joshua Marcus and Emily Bate! Joshua will set aside his banjo and pick up the ukulele to share some brand new tunes. Emily’s performances are a rare treat, offering a wonderful blend of ukulele, guitar and light-hearted vocals.

Joshua Marcus

“To walk in to a new or familiar place, sit down and play a tune and hear the crowd sing along, to have a meaningful exchange with someone or a group of folks you know or don’t know by making music, or be part of an experience that stems from a song or night of singing, that is an extraordinary part of life.”

Joshua Marcus lives in Philadelphia, PA and has produced nine recordings under different bands and monikers in the last nine years, including Fan of Friends. This spring Marcus will release his newest recording, Reverse the Charges, on Chicago’s Contraphonic and Philadelphia’s High Two record labels. Joshua is currently working on a collaborative project to produce a folk recording dealing with current U.S. social and environmental justice struggles.

Emily Bate

She is one half of the drag cover cabaret band Gender Mountain, with Dave End, and plays with lots of other buddies in West Philly. On this special occasion, expect some ukulele shredding, fingerpicked electric guitar, and big singing.

Support paid sick days in Philadelphia!

Find out more about Earned Sick Days Philly

Learn more about Earned Sick Days Philly.

By Angie Norris, co-founder, Studio 34: Yoga | Healing | Arts

People come to Studio 34 to find wellness and community. They work out in yoga classes, perhaps have a therapeutic massage, maybe meet other new mothers in a breastfeeding class. It’s wonderful to see so much activity, and it helps keep us all in good health. Yet everyone gets sick from time to time, and as a nurse, I know that when people get sick, they need rest.

Unfortunately, many people cannot take the time off from work that they need to get well, or to care for a sick family member. More than 200,000 Philadelphians work for employers who do not provide paid sick days. That forces workers to choose between their families’ health and their paychecks — or even their jobs. In my nearly two decades as a nurse, I have seen too many patients who have gotten sicker because they could not afford the time to get better. Even more dispiriting, I have seen many conditions worsen because patients could not take time off to seek relatively simple preventive care. That’s not healthy for workers, for their children — or for anyone who eats at a restaurant, shops at a store, or visits an office where sick employees must come to work.

Luckily, the Philadelphia City Council has a chance to change this. As early as next month, the council could vote to approve the Promoting Healthy Families and Workplaces Ordinance. This law would allow Philadelphia workers to earn paid sick time they could use for their own illness, preventive care or to care for a family member.

The path to wellness starts with personal choices, yet it also depends on one’s community. Helping people find their way to health is why I trained as a nurse, and it’s why my co-founders and I started Studio 34 here in West Philly in 2008. Now the City Council has a chance to do its part — and so do you. Please urge your councilmember to vote for the Promoting Healthy Families and Workplaces Ordinance. (Here’s more info about how you can help.)

fund drive | Help Continue How Philly Moves! (through 3/27)

Studio 34 photographer JJ Tiziou did the first photo shoot for his How Philly Moves project in Studio B back in spring of 2008. Since then, the project has grown into a massive public art project that over 1800 people have had a hand in. There are hundreds more Philadelphians who want to participate in this project, and with your help, we’ll be able to continue photographing them.

Images from that first shoot will be appearing on the side of the parking structures at the Philadelphia International Airport, in what will be one of the largest murals in the world. One of the images included (leftmost in the design) is of Michelle, a Studio 34 work exchange volunteer who participated in one of the shoots. In addition, the images are turning into a large scale projection project on the Kimmel Center during the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts next month!

Now JJ needs community support to continue this special project. Using Kickstarter, we can all contribute a little bit to help fund the next round of How Philly Moves photo sessions. See this PIFA video to learn a bit more about what these special events are like. Check out the Kickstarter video below, please pledge whatever you can, and most importantly, tell your friends!

meditation | Open Sit (Thursdays)

Thursdays at Studio34 Yoga | Healing | Arts
6-7pm

We are going to start having open sits again at Studio 34! On Thursdays from 6:00-7:00pm we will sit in the library (AKA the conference room) and share silence together. The hope is that this weekly gathering will serve as a support for practices of mindfulness, compassion and non-violence. The group does not need to be anything in particular, people may be practicing all different styles of meditation. If beginners are interested in sitting, simple guidance on Samatha (shinay/ calm abiding practice for concentration/ resting the mind) and Metta (tonglen/ practice of sharing loving kindness) may be offered. Everyone is welcome to bring some words with them to open or close the session that may provide inspiration and/or discussion. As long as people are quiet entering and exiting you may come and go as you need.
