class | ZoomDance Winter Session (1/12 – 3/1)

ZoomDance Winter Session
Thursdays, January 12 – March 1

ZoomDance classes at Studio34 are offered at a sliding scale of $90-$110 for the whole 8 weeks, which also gives you unlimited access to all the ZoomDance classes around the city. Or buy a 5-class card for $70, no expiration. For more information, please visit the ZoomDance website at http://www.zoomdance.com/.

10:30am – 11:15am Thursdays, 1.5-3 years
ZoomDance: This is a high energy class of dance, music, story-telling, imagination and fun! Over the course of the session, children will develop agility, coordination, rhythm, and balance through a dynamic range of actions. There is an emphasis on creativity and building confidence through songs, stories, and performance. Each week we’ll read a new story and then explore the movement and adventures of the characters. Kids have the opportunity to show off their favorite moves, invent characters, and try lots of new movement ideas. Grown-ups are encouraged to participate in this class with their small dancers.

4pm – 4:50pm Thursdays, 3-5 years
Intermediate ZoomDance: This class has the same essence as the younger ZoomDance class, with lots of energy and focus on exploring new ideas. We will start to push the edges of dancing the spectrum from wild abandon to careful details. In addition to learning trickier “moves”, we will start thinking of phrases and dances instead of only individual moves, and students will perform for each other in class. When acting out the story, our teachers will encourage students to offer their own ideas too. Grown-ups drop off their dancers for this one, and are invited in on the last day to see what we’ve been working on.

The Great Unknown

“’Tonight, Let’s Pretend’ is a work of meticulous beauty…one of my favorite albums of the year.” (The Deli Magazine)

“…the true strength in West Philly Americana quintet The Great Unknown lies in their moments of restraint. Check out “Shrapnel,” a simmering hymn rooted in a rickety cello duo. Dig the breezy whistling and banjo-led campfire harmonies on the flawless “The Weasel & The Worm,” which closes their self-released debut Tonight, Let’s Pretend.” (City Paper, Philadelphia)

A four piece alt-folk band from West Philadelphia, The Great Unknown conveys the joy of making art for the sake of its creation. They are a band of musician friends who clearly enjoy their craft and don’t shy away from showing it; a band in the old sense of the word, like a family or a gang. Over the last four years, the members have developed a friendship that is the source of both a collaborative creative process and an onstage dynamic that has elicited comments such as “Are you guys brothers?” and, “Those must be blood harmonies.”

Using instrumentation commonly found in folk and country music (acoustic guitars, lap steel guitar, banjo, harmonica), The Great Unknown has honed in on a style that’s both new and instantly recognizable. Their music engages audiences on a variety of levels: the vocal harmonies and focus on songwriting give the band a decidedly folk heart, while the arrangements and power in performance are often that of a rock and roll band. This flexibility allows The Great Unknown to play both intimate acoustic shows and bigger, louder rock venues. Their songs have become part of the canon of Philadelphia’s growing alt-folk community, a scene that is quickly being recognized around the country. The Great Unknown are currently supporting The New Skin EP, self-released in the summer of 2010. The New Skin EP can be heard and downloaded at www.digital.thegreatunknownmusic.com.

Liz Fullerton

“Acoustic music doesn’t mean much unless you’ve got a reason to listen. Liz Fullerton’s voice, intoxicating and sedate as it is without words, will force you to stop everything you’re doing to hear tales of slow journeys toward the center — the place where our heart are filled, our minds put to ease, and our spirits brim with wholeness. She will grab your attention like a baby wolf, and it will be impossible to watch her leave when the songs are through. But you will be better for it.”- Joshua Britton

“I visited Fullerton’s Myspace page so I could listen to her music. Oh my, what I heard was incredible! There is something so special about her voice, timeless and soulful, that makes her songs sound absolutely beautiful. Man, I thought I had a good knowledge of Philly artists but somehow Liz Fullerton went unnoticed to me until now. Oh, you better believe from now on I’ll keep an ear out for more Liz Fullerton music.” One Fan at a time (onefanatatime.com)

Music Together® is an internationally recognized early childhood music program for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergardeners, and the adults who love them. First offered to the public in 1987, it pioneered the concept of a research-based, developmentally appropriate early childhood music curriculum that strongly emphasizes and facilitates adult involvement.

Music Together classes are based on the recognition that all children are musical. All children can learn to sing in tune, keep a beat, and participate in the music of our culture, provided that their early environment supports such learning.

Music Together classes are offered by The Philadelphia Suzuki Piano Academy. For registration and other information, and to RSVP for demonstration classes, please contact icanplay@philasuzukipiano.com or 267.251.0429.

Tuition includes:

  • Ten weekly 45-minute classes
  • A beautifully illustrated songbook with activity suggestions for parents.
  • Two copies of a professionally recorded CD which includes songs, rhythm chants, “play-along” music, and tonal and rhythm patterns — a different song collection for each semester, rotated over three years.
  • A Parent Guide DVD for new families called: “Music Together at Home: Helping Your Child Grow Musically.”
  • An ongoing parent education program throughout the semester to help parents learn how children develop musically, and how to assess their child’s rhythm and tonal development.
