class | ZoomDance Winter Session (1/12 – 3/1)

ZoomDance Winter Session
Thursdays, January 12 – March 1

ZoomDance classes at Studio34 are offered at a sliding scale of $90-$110 for the whole 8 weeks, which also gives you unlimited access to all the ZoomDance classes around the city. Or buy a 5-class card for $70, no expiration. For more information, please visit the ZoomDance website at http://www.zoomdance.com/.

10:30am – 11:15am Thursdays, 1.5-3 years
ZoomDance: This is a high energy class of dance, music, story-telling, imagination and fun! Over the course of the session, children will develop agility, coordination, rhythm, and balance through a dynamic range of actions. There is an emphasis on creativity and building confidence through songs, stories, and performance. Each week we’ll read a new story and then explore the movement and adventures of the characters. Kids have the opportunity to show off their favorite moves, invent characters, and try lots of new movement ideas. Grown-ups are encouraged to participate in this class with their small dancers.

4pm – 4:50pm Thursdays, 3-5 years
Intermediate ZoomDance: This class has the same essence as the younger ZoomDance class, with lots of energy and focus on exploring new ideas. We will start to push the edges of dancing the spectrum from wild abandon to careful details. In addition to learning trickier “moves”, we will start thinking of phrases and dances instead of only individual moves, and students will perform for each other in class. When acting out the story, our teachers will encourage students to offer their own ideas too. Grown-ups drop off their dancers for this one, and are invited in on the last day to see what we’ve been working on.

workshop | Shoulder Liberation with Morgan and Jason (7/4)

Sunday 7/4, 10AM-Noon, $10

The shoulders are often a place where we carry our burdens and feel a lot of tightness. Many 21st century activities, such as typing and driving, can increase this shoulder tension, and Forrest Yoga highlights techniques that bring relief to the shoulders. This special double-teacher Independence Day workshop will focus on loosening the shoulders and our burdens through a series of fun poses, partner exercises and ample hands-on assistance.

class series | Contact Improvisation

Contact Improvisation
Sundays 12:30-2:30 p.m.
(no class 12/25, 1/1, 1/15)

Contact Improvisation is a partner dance form using physical contact, weight sharing and human connection as the impetus for the dance. The point of contact is used as a fulcrum for unusual movement not physically possible in a solo dance. Using gravity and momentum the dance unfolds in unexpected ways. As an improvisational form, there is an emphasis on being present and open to the unknown. All levels of movement experience and ability are welcome to practice CI. There is no judgment about what is beautiful or ugly. It is a deeply personal and experiential dance. The quality of the dance is gauged by how the dancers themselves experience it. There are specific techniques and forms that one can learn and practice in order to make the dance safer and more enjoyable, but these techniques are not an end; There are a means towards a unique, unrepeatable dance.

All levels welcome! $10 per class.

Moving from breath work and seated stretches, to abs and other
core-building exercises, then flowing into sequences of standing
poses, Forrest Yoga builds both strength and flexibility in the body.
This 2-hour workshop will focus on staying balanced—both in its

“Standing Tall” with Rob
Sunday 6/13, 10AM-Noon, $10
Moving from breath work and seated stretches, to abs and other
core-building exercises, then flowing into sequences of standing
poses, Forrest Yoga builds both strength and flexibility in the body.
This comprehensive 2-hour workshop will focus on the legs. From hips,
hamstrings, quads and calves, right down to the toes, students will
learn to work with “active feet” to protect and strengthen the knee
joins. Innovations to classic Warrior poses, along with a selection of
basic and advanced inversions, add new perspectives to what it means
to stand tall in the world and help bring energy—as well as
relaxation—to the legs and beyond.

“Cultivating Strength” with Fatima
Sunday 6/20, 10AM-Noon, $10
Forrest Yoga invites students to go deeper into their yoga practice,
evoking new sensations of the body, mind and spirit. This 2-hour
workshop will use pranayama (breath work), seated stretches, and
abdominal exercises to tone the core muscles, bringing strength to the
internal systems of the body and preparing students for more advanced
twists, backbends, hip-openers and balancing poses. With a focus on
“exploring the scary places” within ourselves, this class offers
opportunities for physical and emotional release, leading to a renewed
sense of relaxation and vitality.

live | Sweet Sound of Music (6/5)

Saturday, June 5, 7:30 p.m.

Join us for another evening of incredible performances in an intimate and cozy setting. Come early to claim a spot on the sofa, all seats have a great view and great sound. Home-brewed sweet tea’s on us!

Chris Kasper: Kasper is an American original who has been quietly distinguishing himself from the crowd of musicians with acoustic guitars and original songs. Kasper is a gifted songwriter who follows neither genre nor format. His songs are not what you’d expect from a dude traveling with an old dawg and sporting a 3-day beard. His songwriting has won awards for himself and the Lowlands, a 4-member traditional bluegrass act. His songs take you on a musical ride, ethereal, floating, delicate, and genuine; he winds you up and calms you down.

Anaïs Mitchell: “Anaïs sings of love among the ruins, coming of age to find yourself an outsider looking for the place you belong, finding other strangers along the way. Details … are offered like clues or keys to the reality all of us sense is imminent and eternal beneath the surfaces of things.”—Hugh Blumenfeld, Sing Out!

From her home in a 200-year-old farmhouse in rural Vermont, Anaïs (“uh-NAY-iss”) Mitchell writes songs that are as intimate as conversations and as rich in detail as short stories. The daughter of “hippie back-to-the-landers” whose father was a novelist and English professor, she remembers her family’s home (another farmhouse in the same state) containing “a library full of novels, and lots of old folk and psychedelic rock albums. The books and the records all lived in the same room, which I am sure led to me thinking of songwriting as a kind of literature, a noble poetic enterprise.”

No surprise, then, that her musical references come from all over the map yet remain interconnected: the country ballads of the Carter Family, the hard-edged cabaret of Brecht and Weill, the story-songs of Randy Newman, the vast narrative scope of Pink Floyd’s The Wall, and the intricately crafted tales of her namesake, bohemian feminist Anaïs Nin, to name afew.

All of these influences come together in Hadestown, an epic “folk opera” retelling of the Orpheus myth. The saga of the poet who ventures into the underworld to rescue his dead wife—a tale now set in a post- apocalyptic world of poverty—began as a live performance created in collaboration with fellow Vermont artists director Ben t. Matchstick and arranger/orchestrator Michael Chorney. In their neck of the woods—TV-less by choice, far from big cities, in a land of radical politics and culture—making your own entertainment, and getting your friends and neighbors to help you flesh it out, is the only way to go.
