class | ZoomDance Winter Session (1/12 – 3/1)

ZoomDance Winter Session
Thursdays, January 12 – March 1

ZoomDance classes at Studio34 are offered at a sliding scale of $90-$110 for the whole 8 weeks, which also gives you unlimited access to all the ZoomDance classes around the city. Or buy a 5-class card for $70, no expiration. For more information, please visit the ZoomDance website at http://www.zoomdance.com/.

10:30am – 11:15am Thursdays, 1.5-3 years
ZoomDance: This is a high energy class of dance, music, story-telling, imagination and fun! Over the course of the session, children will develop agility, coordination, rhythm, and balance through a dynamic range of actions. There is an emphasis on creativity and building confidence through songs, stories, and performance. Each week we’ll read a new story and then explore the movement and adventures of the characters. Kids have the opportunity to show off their favorite moves, invent characters, and try lots of new movement ideas. Grown-ups are encouraged to participate in this class with their small dancers.

4pm – 4:50pm Thursdays, 3-5 years
Intermediate ZoomDance: This class has the same essence as the younger ZoomDance class, with lots of energy and focus on exploring new ideas. We will start to push the edges of dancing the spectrum from wild abandon to careful details. In addition to learning trickier “moves”, we will start thinking of phrases and dances instead of only individual moves, and students will perform for each other in class. When acting out the story, our teachers will encourage students to offer their own ideas too. Grown-ups drop off their dancers for this one, and are invited in on the last day to see what we’ve been working on.

meetup | Aromatherapy Party (4/21)

Wednesday, April 21, 6 – 8 p.m.

Essential oils have a long-time tradition being used for healing, but are they still relevant in this modern age? I say they are even more important now!

In this class you find out which 2 essential oils should be in anyone’s home, which oil has 600x more antioxidants than a full serving of blueberries, and a blend of oils that was believed to save Europe from the plague in the 15th century (great for anyone who deals with a lot of germs). I will also teach you where to (& not to) apply the oils to your body.

The usual light refreshments and informational brochures will be available. The fees are: $15/person, $20/ for two, & $5 if you are a professional bodyworker. Practitioners are encouraged to bring their own tables and business cards to network with the community. Also note that there is a limited amount of people who can attend due to the fact we will be in a smaller space. So RSVP early to claim your spot.

show-and-tell | Pecha Kucha Night Philadelphia Vol. 5 (4/17)

20 slides x 20 seconds

Saturday, April 17th, 5:30-10 p.m.

We exorcise the esoteric humors of sharing, exploring, and storytelling amongst some Philly denizens who are making things happen in and around our fair city.

VOLUME 5 will have a mini-theme of “Made By Hand,” expanding from our first foray into the suited theme from PKN Volume 4. To that end, we have amassed an awesome team of presenters who will take us through their creations at 400-second intervals.

What’s Pecha Kucha (say peh-CHAK-cha)? It’s the Japanese word for “chit-chat.” It’s also a kind of rapidfire creative show-and-tell governed by a simple rule: show 20 slides, talk about each one for 20 seconds. Wired magazine called it: “Say what you need to say in six minutes and 40 seconds of exquisitely matched words and images and then sit the hell down.” We call it an evening of fun, sociability, and a little learning thrown in.

$5 suggested donation.

For more info, see Philly Pecha Kucha, join the PPK Facebook group, or visit worldwide Pecha Kucha HQ in Tokyo. Devised by Tokyo architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham, Pecha Kucha events have been held in more than 220 cities.

Using excerpts from the solo work of Dave End, Glenn Marla, and The World Famous *BOB* along with collaborative pieces, *Realness* is a 90-minute hysterical & heartbreaking journey through the lives of three of NYC’s most endearing performers.  Do queer performers choose to be performers?  Or simply accept that surviving as charismatic gender variants is performance and find a safe space where it can be on their terms?

workshop | Dragon Spirit Yoga™

Saturday, July 10, 1 – 3:45 p.m.

Join the renewal as we welcome spring through a celebration of body, mind & spirit. This workshop will focus on performing a combine series of still postures, moving meditations and breathing techniques, placing importance on the synchronization of mind, body and spirit through Taoist Yoga; a combination Chi Kung & Kung Fu exercises. The roots of this practice lend itself to the traditions of Taoist legends associating particular Chinese myths with animal spirits (Dragon, Tiger, Monkey etc.), mystics (Monk, Warrior, Goddess, etc.) in relation to the Five Elements found in nature (Water, Metal, Fire, Wood & Water) with principals of creating balance (Yin/Yang).

Gabrielle Casella (a.k.a. PlumDragoness) developed “the way of the dragon spirit“(Tao Lung Shen) yoga by drawing inspiration from astrological & spiritual connections to the mythic legends of dragon spirit, Taoist mystical philosophies, Chinese martial/internal arts systems, Hatha yoga practices & the teachings of Chik Qadir Mason, Paulie Zink & Sarah Powers. This original system of yoga reflects her individualized aesthetic as a multi-disciplinary performance artist & healing arts practitioner.

music & art | A May Day Extravaganza: Wes Mattheu and the New Way Down / Mason Porter / Manatawny Creek Ramblers / Marc Silver and the Stonethrowers (5/1)

Presented by Wild Goose Productions

Saturday, May 1, 7 – 11 p.m.

Featuring music by:

Wes Mattheu and the New Way Down
“They are paving the road between old and new by using mandolin, fiddle, the upright bass, and cello; some dating back to 1910. These Philadelphians are forced to explain, “Yes we do live in the city and not in the hills of Kentucky”.”

Mason Porter
“From a whisper to a roar Mason Porter will take you by surprise. Combining lush harmonies with hand clapping sing-alongs and the
unfiltered emotion of a hungry young rock band, Mason Porter is a
force that evokes the spirits of each and every person whose life they
touch. Call it folk, rock, bluegrass, blues or country; Mason Porter
is all of these. Through creative songwriting and constant experimentation Mason Porter is a group of musicians working together to push the limits of traditional American music. This is clearly evident on the bands first full length album Thunder In The Valley (Uncle Nicky Records, 2009).”

Manatawny Creek Ramblers
“Since 2004 the band has built a mixed repertoire of classic bluegrass tunes by the likes of Bill Monroe, Don Reno, The Stanley Brothers, Del McCoury and Flatt & Scruggs as well as an array of original material. During that time The Manatawny Creek Ramblers have collected an enthusiastic group of followers.”

Marc Silver and the Stonethrowers
“The band blends a passion for traditional song, Appalachian fiddle tunes, and jazz with a unique mix of original songwriting, bluegrass and folk music. Lead singing with great vocal character and seamlessly blended three-part vocal harmonies fill out their energetic delivery.”

Art Installation by Angela Miles

music & art | An Evening of Music: Adrien Reju/Joshua Park/Austin McCutchen (4/3)

Presented by Wild Goose Productions

Saturday, April 3, 7:30 – 11:30 p.m.

Featuring music by:

Adrien Reju
“Adrien Reju has captivated audiences with her clear, lilting voice and her sparkling stage presence. After gaining her degree in classical guitar from Ithaca College, the New York City raised singer/songwriter took to the music circuit of Philadelphia, toured throughout the nation with the rootsy trio Angel Band with David Bromberg, and was the creative force behind the Philadelphia-based bluegrass outfit The Lowlands.”

Joshua Park
“Joshua Park has emerged as an exciting new addition to the Philly
local music scene. His EP “One Wish” was released in December 2007,
and a full length album, currently being recorded with a full band and
a lot of love, is on the horizon for release in 2010. This lyrically
driven singer/songwriter counts John Prine, Dan Bern, and Mason
Jennings among his strongest influences, and consistently delivers
poignant songs derived from his own life experience. As a solo artist,
an acoustic guitar trio, or supported by a full band Joshua has a raw
passion that is evident with every note.”

Austin McCutchen (NYC – of Big Honey Mama)

workshop | Art Therapy (4/11)

Kat Johnston

Sunday, April 11, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

This 2-hour workshop will give you a taste of art therapy. Participant will express themselves through artwork and to share what the art means to them. Art therapy offers a unique opportunity to use nonverbal symbols and metaphors to communicate ideas and feelings that can be difficult to put into words. Visual images can work on many levels, and can express seemingly contradictory ideas and feelings. Many find expressing themselves in this way to be freeing and cathartic. Therapeutic art leads to insight and reinforces awareness. And it’s fun! Just creating artwork in a nurturing environment can improve self-esteem and reduce tension and stress.

You do not have to be an artist to participate in art therapy. Creative self-expression can communicate your inner self regardless of skill level or intention. Marking art, as a healing process, promotes joy, peace and relaxation.

Cost: $25

To register, please phone or email Kat Johnston: (215) 806-5844, kathrynjohnst@gmail.com.
