class | ZoomDance Winter Session (1/12 – 3/1)

ZoomDance Winter Session
Thursdays, January 12 – March 1

ZoomDance classes at Studio34 are offered at a sliding scale of $90-$110 for the whole 8 weeks, which also gives you unlimited access to all the ZoomDance classes around the city. Or buy a 5-class card for $70, no expiration. For more information, please visit the ZoomDance website at http://www.zoomdance.com/.

10:30am – 11:15am Thursdays, 1.5-3 years
ZoomDance: This is a high energy class of dance, music, story-telling, imagination and fun! Over the course of the session, children will develop agility, coordination, rhythm, and balance through a dynamic range of actions. There is an emphasis on creativity and building confidence through songs, stories, and performance. Each week we’ll read a new story and then explore the movement and adventures of the characters. Kids have the opportunity to show off their favorite moves, invent characters, and try lots of new movement ideas. Grown-ups are encouraged to participate in this class with their small dancers.

4pm – 4:50pm Thursdays, 3-5 years
Intermediate ZoomDance: This class has the same essence as the younger ZoomDance class, with lots of energy and focus on exploring new ideas. We will start to push the edges of dancing the spectrum from wild abandon to careful details. In addition to learning trickier “moves”, we will start thinking of phrases and dances instead of only individual moves, and students will perform for each other in class. When acting out the story, our teachers will encourage students to offer their own ideas too. Grown-ups drop off their dancers for this one, and are invited in on the last day to see what we’ve been working on.

cabaret | A Dozen Things I Want To Do On Stage (1/15)

A one-woman cabaret by Rebecca Nagle

Friday, January 15, 8 p.m.

Baltimore-based performing artist Rebecca Nagle mixes burlesque routines, contortionist yoga poses, rhyming verse, ritualized confession, science experiments and audience participation in “A Dozen Things I Want To Do On Stage,” a one-woman show that recalls the political European cabarets of the 1920s. Nagle’s Dozen plays with the familiar themes and tropes of the human condition—sex, violence, love, tragedy, fantasy, history and death—to deliver the hard truths, half-truths and straight up lies about the artist and almost everyone else in the room. Before your very eyes, Rebecca Nagle will undress to the song “Wenn Ich Mir Was Wünschen Dürfte,” squeeze herself into a small box, reveal your innermost secrets, discuss why something is racist, fall instantaneously in love, read her own fantasies aloud, act your fantasies out for you, induce a terrible tragedy, fall down, subject herself to interrogation under the influence of truth serum, tell a tall tale, and eventually disembowel herself to the beat of your unbridled applause.

NOTE: “A Dozen Things I Want To Do On Stage” contains material that may be of a sensitive nature to some people, including nudity, strong language, political discourse and graphic violence.

Suggested Donation: $5-$10

You are beautiful: manifesto/advice/instructions

Kenya, by JJ Tiziou

Kenya, by JJ Tiziou

Philly photog and Studio 34 friend JJ Tiziou offers a manifesto/advice/instructions about being “photogenic.” (Hint: you already are.) Snip:

“The beauty in people is there all the time even when a camera’s not around. People are beautiful when they’re finding joy in life, being kind to others, and enjoying themselves. Of course the photo will be stronger if you’ve nailed the lighting, composition, focus etc… but people look beautiful in pictures if they are comfortable and happy, and if you’ve caught them at just the right moment. That’s all there is to it. It’s certainly tricky to catch real emotion in a photograph. And it’s a lot harder if your subject isn’t comfortable. But those are challenges for the photographer to deal with, not the subject.”

show and tell | Pecha Kucha Night Philadelphia, Vol. 4 (1/30)

Pecha Kucha Night Philadelphia

Pecha Kucha Night Philadelphia

Saturday, January 30, 7:30 p.m.

Save the date for the fourth spectacular edition of Philly Pecha Kucha (say peh-CHAK-cha), the rapidfire creative show-and-tell governed by a simple rule: show 20 slides, talk about each one for 20 seconds. Wired magazine calls it: “Say what you need to say in six minutes and 40 seconds of exquisitely matched words and images and then sit the hell down.” We call it an evening of fun, sociability, and a little learning thrown in.

Vol. 4 is Start It Up Night: tales from local folks who willed their dreams into reality, from cupcake trucks to public-access TV. Don’t miss it!

What’s Pecha Kucha? It’s the Japanese word for “chit-chat.” Want more info? See Philly Pecha Kucha, join the PPK Facebook group, or visit worldwide Pecha Kucha HQ in Tokyo. Devised by Tokyo architects Astrid Klein and Mark Dytham, Pecha Kucha events have been held in more than 265 cities.

art therapy workshop | Letting Go Of… (12/13)

With Kat Johnson

Sunday, December 13, 11 – 1 p.m.Art_Therapy

Create, explore, play…. Join us for creative artistic expression focused on emotional well-being, exploration of inner thoughts and dynamics, releasing worry, stress, and everyday life troubles. Variety of media will be used including drawing, collage, painting, and other themed projects with close guidance from the Art therapist. Participants will be encouraged to share, listen, relate and explore with each other as much as they feel comfortable doing in this supportive and nurturing group environment. Topics that may be explored include but are not limited to relationships, balance of life and priorities, hopes/fears, dreams and much more. Art therapy offers a unique opportunity for the use of nonverbal symbols and metaphors that are able to communicate ideas and feelings difficult to put into words. Visual images are capable of working on many level, and of expressing seemingly contradictory ideas and feelings simultaneously. Many find expressing themselves in this way to be freeing and a cathartic release.
Therapeutic art inevitably leads to fresh insights and provides concrete reinforcement for awareness. Most importantly you do not have to be an artist to participate in art therapy. In fact, creative self-expression is satisfying for individuals without art training because their inner selves are successfully, articulately communicated regardless of skill level or intention. Art making, as a healing process, has been shown to be effective in that it promotes a sense of joy, peace and relaxation.
Learn more about art therapy at Kat’s website.

Cost: $25

To register contact Kat Johnston at (215)806- 5844 or kathrynjohnst@gmail.com.
