ArtClash’s Fun-A-Day extravaganza was a phenomenal hit by all accounts. Nearly 500 people came to Studio 34 to see this year’s show, which in addition to 67 enticing exhibits by local artists and artisans, boasted trapeze acts, acoustic performances by Sammy Shuster, and edible goodies aplenty.
For those of you who have never been to a Fun-A-Day, here’s how it works: each artist decides on a project he or she will expertly execute 31 different times, and in 31 different ways, throughout the month of January. At the end of the month, each artist assembles the resulting 31-part exhibit for the ArtClash Collective to arrange in its annual show—which ends up being just as much fun for the spectators as a month full of projects was for the artists.
Exciting pieces in this year’s 2009 Fun-A-Day show included:
-Rose’s How-To-a-Day, featuring hand-crafted, illustrated cards containing instructions for tasks ranging from preparing for a nap to making paper snowflakes.
-Morgan’s 31 Dreamers, in which the artist analyzed 31 different dreams which had been sent to him. Sigmund Freud would have no doubt been impressed.
-Naked-Picture-a-Day, comprised of 31 nude pictures of the artist. (This exhibit garnered a line of people waiting to see it…and not just because it was Valentine’s Day.)
-Karen’s Pie-a-Day, containing 31 completely different homemade pies.
- Monica’s La Moustache, which hung on the wall in the shape of a mustache, containing 31 photos of items and individuals (a baby…a donut) wearing fake mustaches.
-Lauren’s like-themed and yet completely different Mustache-a-Day project, boasting 31 embroidered mustaches on silk.
-Diedra’s Plastic Water Bottle-Puppets-a-Day, a fun, unexpected exhibit of 31 little creatures made out of cut, twisted, and glued plastic water bottles.
- Pattern-a-Day, Kara, Mike, and Nate’s collaboration on an incredible book 31 intricate patterns.
-Ivan’s Craigslist-Word-Cloud-a-Day, which made colorful word-clouds out of the most commonly used words in the personals section of craigslist. The artist even turned his piece into magnetic poetry!
-Corey and Gina’s Charm/Strange Experience, in which Corey projected images to complement Gina’s exquisite piano playing. Performers and observers alike absolutely loved this.
-Cloud-a-Day, containing 31 stunning photos of the sky (with or without clouds) every day during January.
-Box-a-day, a combination box/treat exhibit in which each lovingly crafted card stock box was filled with candy and chocolate. “After our last hour long performance,” Corey said, “Gina and I stumbled through the show looking for food, only to realize that it was all gone! We remembered box a day, and lo and behold, discovered two biscotti cookies, helping us avoid starvation!”
All told, the 2009 Fun-A-Day was a great way to have fun while truly appreciating the variety of human existence and experience. Please join us for next year’s show, and check out Studio 34′s other upcoming events.
